Avn Ayurveda Sahacharadi Kuzhambu:Sahacharadi KuzhambuAbhyanga or ‘massage’ is an important part of the Dinacharya (Dialy routine) prescribed by Ayurvedic literature. Scriptures suggest the use of suitable oils massaged in the direction of hair growth and around joints, to pacify aggravated doshas and maintain balance.Sahacharadi kuzhambu is a deeply uncting and stabilising formula mentioned in the ‘Sahasrayoga – Tailaprakarana’ prepared in a base of Sesame oil plus Castor oil. It is indicated exclusively for external application. It is found to have specific efficacy in restoring mobility and function in the lower extremities. It is a simple combination of Vata-hara drugs in a nourishing and warming base of two earthy oils.Strobilanthus (Sahachara), Dry ginger (Nagara) and Deodar (Devadara) are prime ‘Vata-hara’ drugs.Aggravated vata in the body is characterised by aches and pains, generalised edema, rigidity in joints and overall dryness. Massage with Sahacharadi taila on a regular basis pacifies vata.The nourishing base of sesame oil and castor imparts warmth and unctousness to the skin, joints and deeper tissues. The penetrating quality of castor oil is especially benficial in drawing out deep tissue inflammation.Massage with the oil stimulates blood circulation, helping to deliver the medicinal properties of the taila to deeper tissues.It is used very effectively to support the treatment of palsies, muscle wasting, nerve debility, muscular pain, cramps and aches.Quantity sufficient for whole body application or localised application. Massage in the oil for atleast 15-20 minutes and follow up by sudation or a warm bath for best results.
